Working in the events industry, I’m not one to hold off on planning! Within a week of our engagement, I was ready to plan my wedding. Of course, there was so much to figure out including the big question of where and when we wanted to get married. My dream – barefoot on a tropical beach with no more than 20 people, His dream – 200 people, a formal venue, perhaps at a winery – not on the beach. As you can see, we are opposites who managed to attract.
I spoke with a few colleagues at work who gave me some sound advice: Before you even begin planning, figure out your budget. One thing I recommend to newly engaged brides & grooms; don’t be afraid to ask your parents what they had in mind to spend for your big day. Don’t assume anything – just ask! Traditions have changed so much over the years that it is no longer ‘tradition’ for the parents of the bride to pay for it all. The economy hasn’t been too kind on our parents savings, so if they can’t help as much as you expected – start saving!
With our budget finalized, we realized that we weren’t looking at a 200 person wedding or a destination wedding. We had to think of a Plan B! Over cocktails one night with our closest friends, the topic of our wedding quickly came up. We admitted that we weren’t sure what we wanted to do or where we should go, as we had such opposing views. Our good friend reminded us of how much we love Rhode Island and all the great stories we’ve shared about our summer vacations in Narragansett and Newport. Yes, I even mentioned wanting to get married there in the past! Our friend pointed out that since it is only 3 hours away it would still be a ‘slight-destination’ wedding but it’s close enough where we could invite a good amount of family and friends. This was the compromise we were looking for …Rhode Island, here we come!
Now we begin our search for the perfect wedding venue! With so many gorgeous venues in Rhode Island, we just have to figure out the best fit for our budget. We’ll be checking out this amazing Relais & Chateaux property in Newport – Castle Hill Inn & Resort.
