When speaking of wedding cakes, the first name that comes to mind is “The Queen of Cakes,” Sylvia Weinstock. From her cameo on Gossip Girl to her cakes that have graced star-studded affairs of top celebrities including Donald Trump, Michael Douglas, Catherine Zeta-Jones, Oprah Winfrey, Mariah Carey and many more, Sylvia sat with The Wedding Salon to reveal her favorite flavors, most interesting cake requests and her dream client!
WS: What are the most interesting cake requests you’ve been tackling?
Sylvia: Definitely animal-related cakes. Lately, I’ve found myself making everything from life-like animals and circus cakes, to cakes paying homage to Jurassic Park. Animal-themed cakes are a favorite for Bar and Bat Mitzvahs this year! Another very unique cake I’ve recently created was a cake with 300 Fabergé eggs for the Russian ambassador in Washington. That took some extra time and work!
WS: What is your favorite flavor of all times?
Sylvia: My absolute favorite is Lemon Chiffon with Fresh Raspberries. It is so flavorful and is extra light and fluffy. Lately, everyone has been requesting chocolate for wedding cakes; chocolate with caramel, hazelnut, or mocha. These are definitely the ‘in’ flavors for 2010.
