Your dream cake is the flavor you’ve always cherished, it’s either a towering cake or beautiful and petit, covered in flowers or dusted with cocoa powder- regardless, everyone has a vision for their perfect wedding cake. The cake is often the centerpiece of your reception and requires an immense amount of planning. Here are our tips for selecting your dream cake!
1. Plan in Advance
Give yourself enough time to shop around for cake options unless you are completely firm on your decision. Typically, 3-6 months is enough time to plan your wedding cake. You’ll need to decide on your creator/designer, budget, and planning other decorative elements.
2. Find Inspiration
There are plenty of places to bring in inspiration for your wedding cake. We suggest considering family portraits, online cake ideas (umm Pinterest anyone?), and baker displays. This is also the time to start planning your cake based on your color palette, theme, and overall vision of your reception.
3. Choose a Credible Baker
You’ve got your inspiration and know what you want but now it’s time to shop around for your baker. Start the search online by viewing their galleries, options, and customer reviews. Next, take a visit in-store to meet with the staff and see whether or not you feel comfortable with them. You should leave the bakery with an image of a cake either computer generated or hand drawn. We suggest NYC Bakery and November 5th Bride Event vendor My Madison’s Cakes. They’re beautiful and will work with you to create an amazing wedding cake.
4. Evaluate The Alternatives
Not all cakes need to be white with roses and butter cream frosting. If you consider yourself to be innovative or are looking to add an extra element to your cake consider some of these alternatives
- Chocolate cakes
- Cheese cake
- Cupcakes- Check out our November 5th NYC Bride Event vendor Tres Chic Cupcakes! They’re specialty treats from your custom design will be something for guests to remember.
5. Taste the Cake
We cannot stress this enough. You would never buy your gown without trying it on so don’t buy a cake without tasting it first. Does your cake involve multiple flavors? Try all of them. Even the most basic flavors like chocolate, vanilla, or strawberry can take on different tastes depending on how the cake is made, frosting and fondant, and formulation.
In our opinion, tasting the cakes is possibly the best part of choosing your cake, but while you enjoy amazing melt-in-your-mouth flavors be sure the consider tier sizes, display styles, and serving styles. All of this can be discussed with your cake creator and a good one will be happy to answer any and all of your questions. If you need some help, visit our November 5th NYC Bride Event at the Metropolitan Pavilion and stop by My Madison’s Cakes, Tres Chic Cupcakes, and our other cake vendors!
